FAQ

frequently asked questions

I DON’T OWN A BUSINESS – CAN I STILL COME TO EVENTS OR BECOME A MEMBER?

Many of our members do not own their own businesses - you do not need to own a business or be an entrepreneur to come to our events or join our membership. KWIB is open to all women in the Kelowna business/corporate scene that are seeking networking opportunities, new connections, and opportunities to learn from other inspiring women in the community.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN Individual, YOUNG ADULT, and CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP?

Individual membership is for any female over the age of 30.
Young Adult is for any female under the age of 30 – same benefits of Regular Membership apply.
Corporate Membership is for any business to extend 3 or more of their employees – same benefits of Individual Membership apply.

CAN I GET A MEMBERSHIP REFUND?

You can request a refund up to 15 days from the date of registration.

IS KWIB A REFERRAL GROUP?

Kelowna Women in Business is not a traditional referral-based networking group. We encourage our members and guests to make connections at events and develop organic and genuine working relationships on their own. Referrals will come from the time and effort you invest in building your networks and contacts in the community.

ARE YOU AFFILIATED WITH ANY OTHER WOMEN’S GROUPS?

Kelowna Women in Business is a registered not for profit society, about to celebrate 28 years serving the women of Kelowna; we are not a chapter or affiliate organization of any other local or provincial group.

WHO CAN JOIN THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS?

All our board positions are open to the community – excluding the President and Vice President positions, you do not previously need to be a KWIB member to apply to join the board. Position openings are publicly advertised at events and on our social media channels; interested individuals are required to complete an online volunteer application. Potential candidates with skill sets and experience best suited for the vacant position will be contacted for an in-person interview with other standing board members – when more than one candidate is up for a single position, the board will hold a collective vote. Terms run from 2-5 years.

CAN I ATTEND THE AGM?

If you are a registered KWIB member, you may attend our annual AGM.

WHAT DO MY MEMBERSHIP DUES PAY FOR?

Great question – We are a registered not-for-profit society with relatively low overhead costs but have created a growth-oriented organization with several impactful community initiatives our members are fully a part of. A portion of your dues go towards our bursary programs, support of our charity affiliation each season, and in conjunction with revenues from our events, they help support general operational expenses. All KWIB directors are volunteers, and do not receive any financial compensation for their involvement.

WHAT IS A KWIB SEASON?

Our seasons run from September 1 to June 30 each year; during the months of July and August the board is involved in strategic planning sessions and the organization of the incoming season. Events consist of a mix of sit-down dinners, panel events, workshops, morning coffee networking, the Rise Awards, and other special fundraising initiatives.

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR CHARITY AFFILIATION?

Each June we invite several local organizations to come and pitch their programs and initiatives to the board. Groups that closely align with KWIB’s own values and mandate and serve the community of Kelowna are carefully considered and voted on collectively by the board. Charity Affiliations do not need to be registered charities, but they must be registered not-for-profit societies. A seasonal partnership with KWIB brings public awareness and support, marketing and promotional opportunities on our website and at events, networking with our membership, connections to other community organizations, and a financial donation based on fundraising initiatives at the end of the season.

CAN I BE INVOLVED, BUT NOT AT THE BOARD LEVEL?

Yes! We on occasion need the support of volunteers for subcommittees – please contact us and we would be happy to send you a volunteer application.

I HAVE QUESTIONS/FEEDBACK, WHERE CAN I SEND THEM?

We appreciate your candor and welcome ideas and feedback that will help us shape the KWIB our members and community desire to be a part of – please send any comments or questions to info@kwib.org
